I wanted to create a sense of tension of navigating the pattern of Amber and shifting between shadow worlds where reality is changeable.

NOTUS by Madonna Walters. Acrylic on canvas, diptych, 16″ x 36″. It was in the heat of summer that I made this painting, while re-reading Edith Hamilton’s book, Mythology. I was mesmerized by the stories of the gods and myths. This painting represented warmth and power, so I named it for Notus, the God of the south wind, who represented warmth, radiance, energy, youth, and innocence in Greek mythology. Notus was also the bringer of rain.

FLOWERS FOR CERBERUS by Madonna Walters, acrylic on canvas, 42″ x 64″. Edith Hamilton’s book, Mythology, was the source inspiration for many paintings, including this one. In Greek mythology, Cerberus was the hound of Hades, a multi-headed dog monster who guarded the gates of the Underworld. His role was to prevent the dead from leaving. These “flowers” were an offering to Cerberus, to release the dead.
