Barbara Kennison completed a double major (nursing and art) in her undergraduate work at Nazareth College, Kalamazoo, Michigan. She pursued a master’s degree at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and during her course of studies she taught art classes at a Catholic High School for girls. Barbara later earned her Doctorate from the University of Michigan. For many years, Barbara maintained a private psychotherapy practice, working with children and adults. She utilized her artistic interest and talent in her practice, especially, when working with children and teens suffering from some form of psychological trauma.
She has utilized her artistic talent in other areas as she is often asked for advice on matters pertaining to art and design. She coordinated and directed a photography exhibit depicting differing roles of nursing while teaching at Loyola University in Chicago. She has worked with young students and directed a children’s art exhibit at St. Paul’s Student Parish, serving Ferris State University students and alumni in Big Rapids, Michigan. She has exhibited her work in the Traverse City and nearby areas – most recently at the Traverse City Art and Design Studio, Traverse City DistrIct Library, and at The Ramsdell, Regional Center for the Arts, Manistee, Michigan.
Barbara possesses a deep love of nature, the environment, and music, which are often reflected in her work. She utilizes abstract design in pen, ink, watercolor, and acrylic. Some of her abstract work reveals a character of free flowing and intersecting patterns reflecting observations she has witnessed in natural phenomena. At times her work portrays a hint of realism. Another artistic focus is her soft sculptures of female figures depicting various ages and roles.
